US trade deficit climbs 3.2pc to US$50.5b in November



STATISTICS released by the US Commerce Department show that the nation's trade deficit reached US$50.5 billion in November, a 3.2 per cent uptick from October as an increase in import value outpaced the rise in the value of exports.

The November trade deficit exceeded analyst expectations, with economists surveyed by the Wall Street Journal expecting the trade deficit to total $49.8 billion, while economists surveyed by Reuters were expecting the deficit to total $49.5 billion.

Exports in November stood at $200.2 billion, up 2.3 per cent from October, while imports totalled $250.7 billion in November, up 2.5 per cent from October.

Overall, the US trade deficit for the first 11 months of 2017 stood at $513.6 billion, an increase of 11.6 per cent from the corresponding 2016 period.
